Renaissance Internships – Strengthening New York State’s Science, Engineering and Technology Workforce

Program Summary:
Syracuse University Renaissance Internship Program recruits talented graduate science and engineering students to participate in an experiential-based university-industry partnership while leveraging the visibility and leadership of the CASE Industry Co-op Program both of which are strengthening the technical workforce in Central New York and across the State. Renaissance Internships address shortages of scientists and engineers at numerous firms across CNY, particularly in technological areas targeted for strengthening and growth in The Essential New York Initiative Transforming Central Upstate to a Knowledge-Based Economy and Blueprint for Creative Growth for Upstate NY Region economic development plan of the Metropolitan Development Association. The Renaissance Internship Program also strengthens efforts in recruitment and retention of technical professionals for permanent positions across the State.

Goals and Objectives:
The primary goal of the Renaissance Internship Program is to prepare and retain scientists and engineers for employment in New York State firms. State funding will ensure that firms large and small can participate in, and draw both immediate and longer-term benefits from, the program. The Renaissance Internship Program objectives include:

  • Provide industry access to talented engineering student employees and state-of-the-art technology to assist with solutions to real business problems;

  • Educate interns who are cognizant of the challenges CNY technology firms face and who will have a proclivity to remain in CNY after they graduate;

  • Provide challenging experiences to practical business environments for interns; and

  • Be a liaison for more detailed joint industry-university projects through CASE.
